Concentrator or cylinder?
A cylinder holds a fixed amount of oxygen and must be refilled; a concentrator runs indefinitely on electricity. For continuous or nightly use, the concentrator is cheaper within weeks and safer in a home. A cylinder still has a place as backup during a power cut, and the care team can advise on one.
Which flow rate — 5 litres or 10?
The prescription decides. Most home use is under 5 litres a minute and a 5 L machine covers it. A 10 L machine is for a higher prescribed flow, or for two patients on a splitter under medical advice. Never set a flow the doctor has not prescribed: too much oxygen is not harmless for a patient with COPD.
Using it safely at home
- Keep it a metre from walls and curtains so it can draw air; never in a cupboard.
- No flames, cigarettes or oil-based creams near the patient while oxygen is flowing.
- Change the nasal cannula as advised and wash the humidifier bottle daily.
- Have a plan for power cuts — an inverter that can run the machine, or a backup cylinder.
Delivery, installation and return
Rental is monthly. The equipment is delivered to the address, installed and demonstrated, and collected when the rental ends. Everything is cleaned and checked between rentals. The rental price excludes consumables — masks, tubing, filters, sheets — which are billed as used.
