Who needs a hospital bed at home
Anyone bedridden for more than a week, and anyone recovering from surgery who needs to sit up to eat, breathe easily or be moved without strain.
- Post-surgery recovery — hip and knee replacement, cardiac and abdominal surgery.
- Stroke, advanced Parkinson’s and other long-term mobility loss.
- Palliative care at home, where comfort and repositioning matter most.
- Anyone at risk of bedsores: raising and turning is easier on a Fowler bed.
How to choose: two-function, three-function, manual or electric
A two-function bed raises the back and the knees. A three-function bed also raises the whole bed, which saves a caregiver’s back on every transfer. Manual beds are cranked; electric beds are adjusted with a remote and are the right choice when the patient is heavy or the caregiver is elderly themselves. Tell the care team the patient’s weight and how many transfers a day there will be, and they will send the right one.
Measure the room: a hospital bed is around 2.1 metres long and needs space on at least one side for a caregiver to work and for a wheelchair to pull alongside.
What usually goes with it
An air mattress if the patient cannot turn themselves, an overbed table for meals, and a commode chair if the bathroom is far. Ask for them in the same delivery.
Delivery, installation and return
Rental is monthly. The equipment is delivered to the address, installed and demonstrated, and collected when the rental ends. Everything is cleaned and checked between rentals. The rental price excludes consumables — masks, tubing, filters, sheets — which are billed as used.
