What CPAP does
A steady stream of air keeps the airway open through the night, so breathing does not stop and start. The pressure comes from the sleep study; auto-adjusting machines work within a prescribed range.
Getting used to it
- Try the mask awake, for short spells in the evening, before the first full night.
- Nasal pillows, nasal mask or full-face mask — a mouth-breather needs the full-face one.
