Choosing who comes into your parents’ home is the hardest decision in this process, and it is usually made under time pressure after a hospital discharge. This checklist is what we would want a family member to work through before agreeing to anyone.
Verify before anything else
Before discussing schedules or price, confirm these four things. Any agency that resists is telling you something important.
- Government photo ID (Aadhaar) matched against the person who actually arrives.
- Police or background verification, dated within the last 12 months.
- Training or nursing registration certificate, checked against the issuing council for nurses.
- A named replacement policy — who covers a sick day, and how quickly.
Match the skill to the actual need
Write down what a normal day requires before you interview anyone. Bathing and mobility support, medication reminders, cooking, companionship and physiotherapy exercises need a trained attendant. Injections, wound dressing, catheter or feeding-tube care need a registered nurse.
Being specific protects you twice: you avoid paying nursing rates for non-clinical work, and you avoid the far more dangerous mistake of asking an attendant to do something clinical they are not trained for.
Warning signs worth walking away from
No written agreement, cash-only payment, unwillingness to share verification documents, no supervisor to escalate to, or pressure to decide the same day. Good providers expect scrutiny and make verification easy.
The first two weeks
Agree a short trial and a check-in date. Ask your parent privately how they feel about the person — dignity and comfort matter as much as competence, and an elderly parent will often not volunteer a complaint unless asked directly.
