Does Health Insurance Cover Home Nursing in India? What Policies Actually Pay For

7 min readBy the Eldrly care team

Usually no, and occasionally yes. Most Indian health insurance policies pay for treatment at home only under a "domiciliary hospitalisation" clause — treatment that would otherwise have needed a hospital bed, certified by the treating doctor, for a minimum number of days — and almost none pay for a caretaker or attendant. A few newer policies add a home-care or post-hospitalisation rider that does cover nursing. Read the policy wording, not the brochure; this guide shows you where to look.

The clause that matters: domiciliary hospitalisation

Search your policy document for "domiciliary". The clause typically says treatment at home is covered when the patient’s condition is such that they could not be moved to a hospital, or no hospital bed was available; when the treatment would otherwise have required hospitalisation; when the treating doctor certifies it; and when it continues for at least three days. Many policies list conditions that are excluded from it — asthma, bronchitis, diarrhoea, hypertension, diabetes and others are common exclusions.

If your parent’s home nursing meets those tests — say, IV antibiotics at home after a surgery, on the surgeon’s certification — a claim is worth filing. Routine care for a chronic condition almost never qualifies.

Post-hospitalisation expenses

Separately, most policies cover medical expenses for 30 to 90 days after a covered hospital stay, for the same illness. Nurse visits for a dressing or an injection course, follow-up doctor visits and prescribed medicines in that window are often claimable under this head. Keep every bill and prescription, and get the discharge summary to say what home treatment is required.

What is almost never covered

  • A caretaker or attendant for daily living — bathing, meals, mobility, company.
  • Long-term nursing for a chronic condition without a hospital admission.
  • Equipment rental — beds, wheelchairs, oxygen — unless a rider says so.
  • Anything not prescribed and certified in writing by the treating doctor.

Where the picture is better

Some newer policies and senior-citizen plans offer a home-care benefit, a "hospital at home" cover, or a post-hospitalisation care rider that names nursing at home explicitly. Employer group policies sometimes include it. Ask your insurer in writing: "Does this policy cover nursing care at home, and under which clause?" — and keep the reply.

Tax, briefly

Medical expenses for a senior-citizen parent without health insurance may be deductible under Section 80D within its limit, and specified serious illnesses under Section 80DDB. The rules have conditions and change; ask a chartered accountant before relying on either.

A practical way to plan

Assume insurance pays nothing toward the caretaker and plan that cost as a household expense. Treat nurse visits and doctor visits in the weeks after a hospital stay as a possible claim, and paper them properly from day one. Eldrly’s plans itemise caregiver days and nurse and doctor visits separately for this reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is home nursing covered by Mediclaim?

Only under the domiciliary hospitalisation clause, when the treatment would otherwise have needed a hospital admission and the doctor certifies it, usually for a minimum of three days, and not for excluded conditions. Check the exact wording of your policy.

Will insurance pay for a caretaker for my parents?

Almost never. Attendant and caretaker charges for daily living are excluded from standard policies. A few home-care riders are the exception.

Are nurse visits after surgery claimable?

Often, under post-hospitalisation cover for 30 to 90 days after a covered admission, when prescribed for the same illness. Keep prescriptions and bills.

What documents does a home-care claim need?

The discharge summary, the doctor’s written advice for home treatment, itemised bills from the provider, prescriptions, and the nurse’s visit records. Eldrly provides itemised invoices.
